Brick Calculator: bricks, cement and sand for brickwork

Pick your brick size, enter the wall dimensions and mortar mix, and get the number of bricks, cement bags and sand. The brick size matters more than most calculators admit: a modular brick gives 500 per m³, a 230 mm brick about 434.

Brick calculator

Example: 10 × 2.5 × 0.2 m = 5 m³ of modular brickwork in 1:6 → 2,500 bricks (2,625 with 5% wastage), about 6.3 bags (315 kg) of cement and 1.31 m³ of sand.

How many bricks are in 1 m³?

With modular bricks (190 × 90 × 90 mm, IS 1077) and 10 mm joints, each brick occupies 200 × 100 × 100 mm, so 1 m³ of brickwork takes 500 bricks and about 0.23 m³ of wet mortar. Larger conventional bricks give fewer per m³: about 434 for 230 × 110 × 70 mm. Add around 5% for breakage.

The formula

Bricks per m³ = 1 ÷ [(L + joint) × (W + joint) × (H + joint)]
Wet mortar per m³ = 1 − (bricks × L × W × H)
Dry mortar = wet mortar × 1.33
Cement (m³) = dry mortar ÷ (1 + sand parts) · kg = m³ × 1,440 · bags = kg ÷ 50
Sand (m³) = dry mortar × sand parts ÷ (1 + sand parts)

Bricks500500500
Cement (bags)1.771.471.26
Sand (m³)0.2450.2550.263

Uses a 1.33 dry factor for mortar; 1.27 lowers cement by about 5%. Bricks before wastage.

230 × 115 × 75240 × 125 × 85392

Order using the modular figure when your bricks are 230 mm, and you'll have about 15% too many. Measure a few bricks from the actual supply before ordering.

Half-brick walls, per m²

For a single-brick-thick partition, work per square metre of wall face. A modular 90 mm wall needs 50 bricks per m² and about 0.013 m³ of wet mortar. A 115 mm (4½") wall in 230 × 110 × 70 bricks needs about 52 bricks per m². Use the calculator with the wall thickness set to the brick width.

Why online answers disagree

Published figures for cement in 1:6 brickwork range from about 1.2 to 1.9 bags per m³. The differences come from rounding mortar to 0.25 or 0.30 m³, different dry factors, and some plain arithmetic errors. The calculator shows every step, so you can check it against your own rate analysis.

From estimate to measurement

The calculator gives the materials. On site, brickwork is measured in m³ (or m² for half-brick walls) in the measurement book and billed through the RA bill, while cement issued is reconciled against the theoretical quantity. True Site Sync does all three: see the measurement book, the material reconciliation statement and the plaster calculator for the next stage.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks are in 1 cubic metre?

500 modular bricks (190 × 90 × 90 mm) with 10 mm joints. For 230 × 110 × 70 mm bricks it's about 434. Add about 5% for breakage.

How much cement is needed for 1 m³ of brickwork in 1:6?

About 1.26 bags (63 kg) of cement and 0.26 m³ of sand for modular brickwork, using a 1.33 dry factor.

What is the size of a modular brick?

190 × 90 × 90 mm under IS 1077, which becomes 200 × 100 × 100 mm with a 10 mm mortar joint.

How many bricks are needed per square metre of a half-brick wall?

About 50 modular bricks per m², or about 52 for 230 × 110 × 70 mm bricks in a 115 mm wall.

Why do brick calculators give different answers?

They assume different brick sizes, mortar volumes and dry factors. Check which brick size the calculator uses.

What mortar mix is used for brickwork?

1:6 is common for general brickwork, with richer mixes such as 1:4 for half-brick and load-bearing walls. Follow your specification.

1 cubic meter me kitni int lagti hai?

Modular int (190 × 90 × 90 mm) me 10 mm joint ke saath 500 int, aur 230 mm wali int me lagbhag 434. Tootne ke liye 5% zyada mangaiye.
