What is a DPR? (full form & meaning)
The full form of DPR is Daily Progress Report โ also called a Daily Progress Record or construction daily report. It is the single most important day-to-day document on a construction site: a dated log of what was actually executed, who and what was deployed, what materials moved, and what is blocking tomorrow's progress.
The site engineer or supervisor prepares the DPR at the close of each working day, and the planning engineer or project manager reviews it. On most Indian projects it is then shared with the client or PMC. (Don't confuse it with a Detailed Project Report, which shares the abbreviation but is a pre-construction feasibility document.)
Why the DPR matters
It feeds your billing
Quantities recorded in the DPR flow into the measurement book and your RA bill. No daily record, no clean claim.
It defends delay claims
A dated log of hindrances โ late RMC, rain, drawing delays, client instructions โ is your evidence in an extension-of-time or claim dispute.
It shows progress vs plan
Cumulative executed quantity against the contract BOQ tells everyone the real percent complete, not a gut feel.
It controls cost leaks
Logging labour, machinery hours and material consumed every day is how you catch idle equipment and material walking off site.
What a DPR must include
There's no single national template โ the employer, PMC or contract conditions decide the exact layout. But a complete construction DPR always captures these:
- Header & date โ project, client, location, DPR number, date, day and weather.
- Work executed today โ activities by location and BOQ item, with quantities (Nos ร L ร B ร H) and units.
- Manpower โ skilled and unskilled counts (ideally straight from attendance), agency-wise, total man-days.
- Machinery & equipment โ what was deployed, hours run and idle.
- Materials โ received (with challan/DC number) and consumed.
- Safety โ toolbox talk, PPE compliance, incidents or near-misses.
- Quality โ cube tests, slump, inspections, NCRs.
- Hindrances & delays โ the blocker and the reason (this is your claim evidence).
- Instructions & visitors โ client/consultant instructions, site visits.
- Progress vs plan โ cumulative done against contract BOQ, with percent complete.
- Photos & signatures โ dated site photos, signed by site engineer and project manager.

Illustrative single-day DPR. In True Site Sync this is one screen โ most fields auto-fill from attendance, measurement and the BOQ.
How to prepare a DPR โ step by step
1. Fill the header
Project, date, day and weather. Give the report a running DPR number so nothing is missed.
2. Record work & quantities
Log each activity against its BOQ item with measured quantity โ this is what later becomes your bill.
3. Pull manpower & machinery
Take labour counts from attendance and list machinery with hours run โ skilled/unskilled split and man-days.
4. Log materials
Received (with challan) and consumed, so stock and cost reconcile.
5. Note safety, quality & hindrances
Toolbox talk, tests, and every blocker with its reason โ your claim trail.
6. Attach photos & sign off
Dated site photos, then site-engineer and PM signatures. Share the PDF with the client.
Daily โ weekly โ monthly
A good DPR isn't just a daily chore โ it's the atom your progress tracking is built from. Consistent daily reports roll straight up into a weekly and monthly progress report: total man-days, work executed by item, materials consumed, equipment usage and cumulative percent complete. If your daily data is clean, the client MIS writes itself.
Common DPR mistakes to avoid
- Vague "work in progress" instead of measured quantities against BOQ items.
- Skipping hindrances โ then having no evidence when you claim an extension of time.
- Re-typing labour from memory instead of pulling it from attendance.
- No photos or signatures, so the report can't be relied on later.
- Reporting weekly from memory โ details are lost within 48 hours.
Excel DPR vs a site app
An Excel DPR template works for a single site, but it breaks the moment you have several: quantities don't tie back to the BOQ, labour is re-keyed, photos live in WhatsApp, and nobody can see cumulative progress without a manual roll-up. A construction daily report app fixes that: the engineer records the DPR on the phone, labour auto-fills from attendance, measured quantities flow to billing, and the DPR carries a live plan-vs-actual progress section. One tap generates a clean, branded PDF โ and the same data becomes your weekly and monthly reports automatically. See it all on the features page.
Frequently asked questions
What is DPR in construction?
Daily Progress Report โ the dated daily log of work executed, manpower, machinery, materials, safety, quality, hindrances and progress, prepared by the site engineer and checked by the PM.
What is the full form of DPR?
Daily Progress Report. (Not to be confused with a Detailed Project Report, a pre-construction feasibility document that shares the abbreviation.)
What should a DPR include?
Header/date, weather, work executed with quantities, manpower, machinery, materials received and consumed, safety, quality, hindrances, instructions, progress vs plan, photos and signatures.
Who prepares and checks the DPR?
The site engineer or supervisor prepares it; the planning engineer or project manager checks it; it is shared with the client/PMC as the contract requires.
Is there a standard DPR format in India?
No single national template โ the contract/PMC decides. Any report capturing work, resources, materials, hindrances and progress satisfies most contracts.
